It was times like these that Kent wondered why he'd agreed to join the Stargate program.
Rising from the ground he allowed himself to stretch, brushing the dirt off the soiled knees of his grey suit pants. Once half of a very nice tailored suit they were damaged beyond almost all recognition, but allowed their wearer an all too brief respite from the drab sage off-world uniforms the expedition's personnel were required to wear.. most of the time. Dropping the equipment he'd just been using to remove sediment from the century old oil jar he was trying to unearth, the archaeologist readjusted the rolled up sleeves for his now off-white dress shirt, reaching for the packet of cigarettes his his breast pocket. Absentmindedly he flipped open the packet and tapped it against the palm of his hand, only to learn he was out.
Just what he needed.
When the bomb smuggled by the Olympian 'god' Athena had detonated on the planet known as D2X-374, the majority of the planets surface had been flattered, strips of mountains and forests alike. Aside from the Ancient outpost the expedition now occupied - itself concealed at the time inside a mountain - their enemies had left seldom little of the planet to explore. This small dig site they'd uncovered a small walk from the Ancient city-ship appeared to be some sort of township from the original Olympian occupation of the planet, littered with the Linear B / Cuneiform-based written language Doctor Cutter had identified during the early days of the expedition as the base language of the Olympian empire.
The real teaser though had been the discovery of the much earlier written language of Linear A, which some were saying was native to a recently uncovered mythical race known as 'the Titans', enemies of the Olympians. Sadly for Kent he was having no luck uncovering any such Linear A remains, and settled himself by taking a mouthful from his canteen, the non-military issue one that contained anything but water. Cursing to himself at the growing heat as the day wore on he looked around to see if anyone else was having any more success.
