BC-304 Odyssey
Bridge
The sky. The sun. The breeze. Weather. These simple super-natural (not to be confused with supernatural) elements from Earth, was what she missed most. Just don't tell her bestie, Cameron, that she said that. He would full on throw a tizzy and take back her ukulele. Well - maybe not that harsh, but at least frown a little. She still emailed him quite a bit, though there was very little she could say. Most of the conversations were one sided - Abi nodding and smiling at Cameron's good news. He was getting married soon, to one of Abi's few female friends, Ginger. He wanted her to be his best man, and Ginger wanted Abi to be her Maid of Honor...so it was decided that Abi was the Best Maid. Too bad she probably couldn't go. Damn. Maybe she could pull a few strings and start speaking in Latin to a higher-up, and scare them to the point of giving her some leave? Hm. That might work.
Mind pushing away thoughts of home, Abi continued to toil over her new job - find ze hacker (not to be confused with the hacker). She studied languages all through college - which did not include what computers spoke, sadly. She had a base understanding of it, thanks to a few super-geeky friends from Johannesburg (they are everywhere), but knew from the get-go that Armstrong was the woman for the job. Sure, Abi was hired for her strong ability to crack codes - also known as a Cryptologist, even if that wasn't her concentration. She was just working as a DJ and managed to break down an alien transmission to the point of getting the message 'wee come in pieces', and a few weeks later - bam - the SGC ate her, fresh out of college.
Reaching down with her right hand, she silently scratched her ankle - the one with a slightly woven-looking tattooed bracelet, that was just below the normal sock-line. Stupid socks made her itchy. She was a sandal girl. Taking a deep breath, she focused her deep blue eyes upon the screen. Abi could do this. She had too...
Wait a second...
Leaning her head to the side, she announced her findings aloud (well managed to get it out the second time, after a brief quip in Japanese), the pink slowly fading from her cheeks, out of her language confusion. Glancing over her shoulder, she jumped slightly, as the Russian Ninja proved his namesake. Damn, he was good.
"<Where have you tracked them to?>" Alek asked in Russian, causing Abi to realized it was better to keep this on the down-low, until they new exactly who was behind it; just in case they had an accomplice upon the bridge. Ah, he as a smart one.
Tilting her head so she could see him clearly, she smiled, obviously proud of her findings.
"<I have tracked him to the Commissary. Apparently they're getting a horrible meal, as they slowly destroy us,>" she replied, forcing her voice to fit the template that was the Russian accent. Maybe that's why her voice sounded so odd when she spoke one of her native tongues. It was all bent out of shape from putting on whatever accent needed, to make the speech clearer to whomever she was speaking to. Any language spoken with the wrong accent sounded funny.
Her dark blue eyes followed Alek's hand, as it dropped to the sub-machine gun that was slung around his shoulders. How had she missed that before? Damn - he pulled another Russian Ninja move on her.
Then the lights went off.
"<I would like the blame the hacker, but that was caused just over there,>" Abi gestured, to where the redhead she had seen wandering around the bridge, suddenly apologized, quickly followed by the lights going back on.
"All right, what else can be done by the PK Tech Girl?" she asked, as Alek silently motioned her over, "We have hacker on board vessel," he said in English, an obvious 'grr I'd rather be speaking Russian,' tone threaded in his vowels. Yes - Abi was good at reading voices. She blamed her minor for that; Psychology. There had been one single professor that was obsessed with reading people. Abi wasn't that good, she just picked up on the subtle things, sometimes.
"How well do you know workings of vessel?"
"Dia duit," Abi greeted Saoise, knowing the girl was versed in Irish Gaelic (not to be confused with Scottish Gaelic).
Hearing footsteps behind her (since he was no Russian Ninja), she peered over her should again - past Alek - to she the Shaft approach.
"Hola, monsieur," mixing languages was fun.
"What are we conspiring on now?"
"Umm..." she trailed, dropping her voice, "<We're busy, go away,>" she whispered in Russian, under her breath, before glancing up again, ready to answer, in a voice only slightly louder than her previous whisper, "We may be onto something, Sha--sir," too easy to call him 'Shaft', "Just keep stuff in order on the bridge, and we'll take care of your little hacker problem," she winked, with a smile, before turning back to her the other two.
The triumphant trio was ready for action!
