Episode Sixteen: Genesis (Part 2)

The moment Kamarov materialized on the bridge he went to work. Darting down to the rear of the bridge he went about trying to assess what was going on in the surrounding battle. Colonel Harrison had already launched the cruisers F-302 fighters, with their cockpits filled by reserve pilots and RIO's; while they weren't as up to scratch as the pilots were, they would have to do for the time being. As the fighters returned to be rearmed and refueled, the rescued pilots from the Nidhogg cruiser would be swapped in. Until such time though, the pilots would be called upon to help out where they could on the Icarus.

From the ships log, Alek quickly reviewed the battle. The combined Human and Asgard forces had destroyed five of the Nidhogg cruisers, including one that was only partially completed. There was still a large number left, and with the element of surprise gone the tide of the battle was now turning in favor of the enemy. It was begining to show; with the last minute an Asgard cruiser - Othala - a flight of Chariot-class Drone Fighters and an F-302 has been taken out. The bugs were forming strong formation lines, and the combined task force elements were having trouble cracking it. Add to that the enemy vessels on the flanks were begining to wheel around to surround and cut off more Asgard vessels, and things were looking grim.

At this station, Alek went to work. Under the constant barrage of fire, shields were starting to show signs of depletion. As always, repairs teams were down below deck, working to repair any damage sustained, while those on the bridge did what they could remotely. Kamarov started to slowly slide into his work mode, becoming 'one' with the battle damaged vessel.

He then saw that other enemy ships were trying to trap them using a very old manoeuvre, he contacted Tyr, Aegir and Hermod to hold open the gap. And ordered Sujanha and Kvasir to cover the rear areas with what was left of the 717th Fighter Engagement Squadron. The Hákonarmál would what the human's would call babysit the Icarus.

It was then when the Othala, started to succumb to the enemy fire. Idun hoped that Hermod was beamed out of his dying ship, or his consciousness was transferred. The enemy had now sending every vessel they had working or not to close the gap.

"Increase Speed" he said to the other commanders. He then ordered the fighters to go into the gap and hold it long enough for the human vessel to escape.

"Greetings Idun, My vessel is now suffering damage. I can not hold this position for long" Stated Baldr. Idun nodded. "Indeed Baldr, when you are not capable of holding the gap. Head to Midgard immediately" Idun stated.

He then noticed the other ships were being damaged due to them shielding the Icarus from damage. Idun decided to move the Hákonarmál into position where his ship would deal with the incoming fire. He noticed Tyr, Aegir and Baldr now entering hyperspace with Kvasir and Sujanha breaching the ring of enemy ships. The Icarus was behind still with his own vessel giving covering fire, they were loosing many fighters in this attack and hoped that they could do it. He realised the human ship would not make it therefore activating his tractor beam system he pushed them with great force past the blockade as the Hákonarmál started to loose shields and engine systems. He blinked several times trying to activate hyperdrive, the systems were destroyed.

The last view the Icarus had before entering hyperspace was of the Hákonarmál, breaking apart and exploding near the group of enemy ships.

From his console Kamarov was modulating the shield generators, redirecting and rerouting power to keep the shields holding strong. So far the more 'superior' Asgard vessels had bore the brunt of the onslaught, and to Alek that was a good thing - the less weapons being discharged as the Icarus, the better. Bringing the shields back up to almost full power, the Russian warrant officer moved across the bridge to check the status of their rail guns, which had been firing non-stop since entering the engagement. Overheating was always a problem for them.

Without warning, the ship rocked violently, pulled by an unseen force. Alek was about to call for a sitrep when a hyperspace window opened nearby, with all Asgard vessels pouring into it. The Icarus entered for half a second, seemingly towed by Idun's vessel the Hákonarmál, until the ship exploded into a blinding light. The Icarus dropped out instantly, now considerable distance from the battle.

But that didn't make the situation better - the Asgard had fled, and in their wisdom, left the F-302's and their own Drone Fighters behind.

In the faint distance, the enemy cruiser began to react. Seven of the vessels jumped into hyperspace, in the same direction to which the Asgard had fled. The remaining seven cruisers - five of them only half completed - set a new vector, and began to speed toward the Icarus' position, still being engaged by the F-302's. The Asgard Drones, out of range of an Asgard Core, when dormant and shut down. They were quickly picked off by the Nidhogg's plasma launchers.

"REPORT!" Admiral Francis screamed from the front of the bridge. "Asgard fled," Alek called back. "We've been dragged a considerable distance away but enemy vessels closing fast. They'll be on us in two minutes." In a heart beat, things had gone from bad to worst.

Nolen turned towards Prophet and nodded "I agree with that Captain, let's get that done, but a bit further down the hall. I want a bit of the hall way for us t........." Nolen didn't finish his order as a blinding flash over took him. With in seconds latter they were in the hanger bay of the Icarus. Nolen nodded and smiled. He walked passed the others. He got to Alek and nodded to the man, "Good work Alek" he said then turned to the others. "Okay men I want you suited up in five minutes. Get your RIO's and ships ready, I want lift off by the time I get back" he ordered. There was still a battle going on out there and Nolen owed the Queen some payback. He walked out of the Hanger and towards the Bridge. Upon arriving he gave his salute and said "Commander's, Thanks for the pick up. With your permission I would like to get our fighters out there and give out a little payback" he said with a little devious smile he asked.

Tony had spent most of his time getting every F-302 battle ready, whilst also maintaining the ships Asgard core, and making sure everyone was doing their job. He ran around the ship, wishing it was like Atlantis so he didn't have to run so far.

"Admiral! We've got a couple of large breaches in the hull, I've sent teams all over the ship, what you want me doing? I can try and get some Asgard systems up, but no promises, I'm like Mckay, but don't trust me to get it done super fast", he explains, watching the battle out of the bridge window, and then back at the Admiral awaiting his instructions.

As Capt Cromin was prepping the explosives, they all got beamed aboard the Icarus. Seeing 302's all around the Captain was about to ask permission to prep fighters when his Squardron leader spoke Capt Cromin's thoughts. "Okay men I want you suited up in five minutes. Get your RIO's and ships ready, I want lift off by the time I get back" Captain Cromin responded "Roger that Sir", turning to the rest of the Crew he said "You all heard the man, lets get ready for some action, prep the 302's."

After cleaning up from being splattered by alien guts Patrick walked towards on of the chairs on the bridge and took up post there wasn't really much else he could do other than find things for him to do which was always a plus. Looking at the screen he sighed things weren't looking good for the battle out there the Nidhogg were smart though Patrick knew that they could beat them. "Admiral weapons down sixty eight percent and shields are holding at sixty percent." Patrick shouted as he gave the Admiral the situation report hell if they don't get anymore deeper in the hole they were in now a miracle was needed right now. Turning towards Alek Patrick spoke once again. "How's the rail guns holding Alek?" Patrick asked looking at the man. Patrick knew that the rails guns where a problem they could overheat then they would be in deep water so to speak and then the next problem would be the drones he wondered how many where left in their supplies. “Can we send nukes through Asgard beaming like Atlantis has done in the pass?” Patrick shouted as he gave his thoughts.

"If I may butt in, give me at least a minute and I can try and beam a nuke through, its not an Asgard thing to do, so they won't expect it, but since the Asgard have obviously used beaming on them before, its a fifty fifty chance it will work, but no promises", Tony explains and he stands at a console with his tablet plugged in writing out lines of code and running scans.

Minute Later..

Tony looked up in excitement, "We can launch a nuke, their jamming is down because they don't expect us to use large weapons, but, if we want this over fast, we need to strap a Naquada generator to a nuke, its primitive, but it'll only take a few minutes, but we've got one chance, they will jam us after the first one, we need to get them all in one shot, and we need to grab every 302 on the run while we jump, in other terms, we're not gunna be in one place when they come to land, and we need our people off the ship", Tony explains as he eagerly awaits his superior's orders on the idea.

As Captain Cromin was getting ready for some Dog fighting, he heard over the radio about beaming nukes and the aliens jamming the signal to beam those nukes when he remembered some old KGB assasination case file he had gone over while he was in the pentagon, Poison on the skin. So he got on his radio to his Squadron Leader. "Cromin to Nolen, do you copy? Sir, I just heard about beaming nukes and aliens jamming the beaming signals. We don't have to beam the nukes in to the ship if they are being jammed, we can beam just outside their bridge or their hyperdrive or even weapons. Without their Bridge it will be almost impossible to fly especially if their Queen dies in the process in which they will lose all sort of tactical coordination, without weapons they can't fight, except they send fighters, which will make it an even easier task, we can then beam a nuke in the midst of the fighters they send and clean up with rail guns and 302's or finally if we take out hyperdrive we can then run. Besides, what did Alek destroy in the Alien vessel, does it help us in any significant way now? Sir you let me know what our course of action will be. Cromin out!"

For most of this mission, it was like Destiny was barely even there. From being a prisoner of war, to escaping, and now back on the Icarus. It was a lot to take in and a lot had been floating through the young woman's mind. This whole time the captain had come to deal with most of thoughts and actions of life that was dictating her. Different situations of the past that she needed to let go and move on from because they would only hinder her from here on out. Like the situation with Kevin. Whether or not he was alive didn't seem to matter anymore. The female soldier had to stop living in the past and start living in the present. He would have wanted Destiny to move on with life eventually. She needed to become her old self again; the one that seemed lost for too long. The old self that needed to live for her young sister Azalea Andre. That was the relationship needed to be focused upon whenever leave was available for her. Grief had stricken this pilot for too long of a time. It was time for U turn, and that time was now.

Walking up next to Nolen, Destiny smirked slightly. "Don't think you are going up there without me," told her commander, teammate, and a person she considered a close friend. Hearing Cromin coming through on the radio, the captain let out a small sigh. "Cromin, we got your transmission. Don't worry, all of you will know what the next course of action will be. For now just be prepared for whatever the Squadron Leader decides," radioed back to Cromin then looked over at Nolen then to the others. "So are we just going to stand here all day, or as we going to kick some serious Alien arse?"asked a light smile crossed her face, a real smile that hadn't been seen in months. It was good to let go and bury what needed to be buried.

Walking onto the bridge of her newly launched vessel, Colonel Miranda Elwood looked out the forward view port at the planet of Midgard, the location to which the Aeneid had been redirected. The newest vessel in the Earth fleet was on it's way to join Task Force Ida when they'd received an encrypted burst transmission from the Asgard, warning them of an alien invasion and directing them to set course for Midgard. Having just arrived on station, the Aeneid was waiting for the Asgard to turn up and explain what was going on.

Behind her, Miranda's newest crew member - Major Andrew Johnson, Australian Army - entered the bridge. He'd been reassigned from the Delian Expedition due to the close relations and bonds he'd made with the Asgard during his work with the SGC. He was set to become the liaison between the Asgard and the Task Force, and would be stationed aboard the Icarus. "Any idea what this is all about Major?"

It was all hands on deck as battle stations on board the Icarus were manned. Having solved the problems with the shields, Alek moved down the line of consoles toward the weapons systems. "How's the rail guns holding Alek?" Major Bailey called out. At the console, Alek brought up the overview of their Earth built rail gun systems. "All primary batteries online - strike that, forward bow battery is off line, damage control is en route to assess." Given the Asgard had turned tail and run, the Earth cruiser was holding up surprisingly well.

On the bridge of the originally Russian built vessel, Kamarov paused for a moment from his damage assessment to listen in as Warrant Officer Hansford proposed his idea of launching a nuke. The BC-303 already had Naquadah enhanced warheads on board, known as Mark VII's. If Tony's calculations were correct and they'd only get one shot at firing the missile, they'd need to make it count - strapping additional Naquadah generators to the already powerful warhead should give it that added bit of punch, and if they got the vessels clustered together, they may just have a chance at taking them all out. "We can make it work sir," Alek added. From the commanders chair, Colonel Harrison regarded their suggestions for a moment. "Do it,". Turning to Tony, the two warrant officers made their way down below deck to prepare the deadly payload.

Rushing down into the engineering hub, Alek and Tony set about putting their plan into action, which called on them to adapt and improve the design of the Icarus' Mark VII tactical nuclear warheads. "Where do we start Chief?"

"I need two Naquadah Generators and one warhead", Tony says as he grabs his tablet and hooks it up to the monitor, "Ok, heres what the plan is, we send this nice little present to one of the ships, now heres the hard part, we will need to get them to all come close to us, so the plan is to cut out the engines just until they all come in for a final 'destroy' attack, once we're swarmed, we power up the engines to full, beam the 'present' and then jump away as fast as we can, only problem is, theres a 70% chance the engines will fail when we get to full power within two seconds, we could burn them up along with the hyperdrive, so it's risky and trust me, its our only option", Tony explains to everyone as a group of engineers walk in with the equipment.

"Alek, I need you a two others to make sure the warhead is ready to be beamed as well as putting a team in the engine room and hyperdrive room, just in case they burn out, I'm gunna make sure that this generator overloads when we want it to", Tony explains as he walks to the generator "And trust me, the math on that one would take Mckay a week, but I'm pretty good myself", Tony says sarcastically as he puts two diagnostic pins onto the generator.

As the two engineers hurried off the bridge, Harrison turned to the pilots standing there. "Our beaming technology is still online," he began. "There's no point risking pilots out there if we can take them out using the Asgard tech. Get as many pilots ready to launch in their 302s if this doesn't work though, Nolen." As Nolen relayed the orders, the Lieutenant Colonel stood from his chair and said so only she could hear, "You alright, Destiny? If you want to stay aboard and assist in coordinating, that's fine ... ." Jonathon had known her a while, and from reading her body language knew something was a bit off. He just needed to know, as her friend as well as her superior.

Radio chatter was indicating that the engineers were trying to beam a nuke over to the enemy's ship. Captain Cromin had always been trained to have options ready for his superior officers. Considering the probability of the current plan of action Cromin rallies the (NPC's)Pilots. "Alright Ladies, it seems, i repeat it seems that the course of action at the moment is to beam nukes over to the enemy ships, and just in case that does not work we will have to go out there and do some damage. Personally that is what I'd prefer since they captured some of us and all.... The Ship's Weapons are the primary targets in this mission except you have a clear shot of destroying them, hyperdrives and actually destroying them come secondary. I am sure that I have made my self clear and just in case we do go out there, nobody dies today or so help me, I will personally kick your butts. Airmen do you copy?" The Pilots responded "Hooyah!" Captain Cromin then said "Alright, in your 302's as soon as all the other captains are done addressing you- begin ignition only when we get the orders from the Bridge." With this he looked at the other captains present hinting "the floor is yours."

In the engineering hub, Alek listened intently to the Chief's plan. He was the ship's crew chief, it's most senior and experienced NCO, and a weapons specialist and designer to boot. If there was an application of firepower that could get them out of this mess, he'd be able to figure out how to apply it. Kamarov made a list of the parts required - two generators and a nuke - and handed them to a junior tech who went running for them. Listening on, he took notes of the combat maneuvers Tony was prescribing, and passed them onto the bridge officers. If the engines were going to be cut and thrown back on, it would pay to let those at the wheel know what was going on.

The tech Alek had dispatched returned, informing the Russian engineer that the generators and the nuke needed were being moved into position. Due to security measures, they'd need to take the generators to the missile magazines and do their work there, before beaming out the weapon. With the enemy jamming systems on the lead Nidhogg ship destroyed during the team's escape, delivering the weapons via Asgard beams wouldn't be a problem. "Alek, I need you a two others to make sure the warhead is ready to be beamed as well as putting a team in the engine room and hyper drive room, just in case they burn out, I'm gunna make sure that this generator overloads when we want it to," Hansford said, continuing with his work. Kamarov nodded to the American. "Aye conrade." With that he headed off toward the missile magazine to prepare the nukes.
