Thunder crashed, causing Cara to awaken from her sleep. She had automatically reached for a weapon that wasn’t there and when Cara saw where she was, relaxed. She hadn’t really thought about what living on a military base for the last year or so did to her, until she spent time away from it all. It was just thunder, a storm outside, and her first reaction was that it was some sort of explosion, thinking she was back at the Delta site. Cara glanced around her dark room, feeling like she was drowning in her oversized bed.
Not feeling like sleeping anymore, and the fact that her head still ached from the amount of crying that she did the day before when she arrive home, Cara headed towards her bathroom. She pulled out some aspirin from the medicine cabinet and then swallowed it with a bit of water form the sink. Another bolt of lightning struck followed by the loud rumblings of thunder once again. She took a deep breath as she looked at her reflection in the mirror, she looked terrible. The last few weeks had been hard on her.
After the body switching mission, as she delicately named it, Cara has received news that her father, Edmond Coyle, esteemed Baron, and Leader of the House of Lords, suffered a heart attack and was in critical condition in the hospital. Cara had already decided to make it her mission to figure out a way for faster travel between the Delian Galaxy and this one. The three week spent stuck on that ship was an absolute nightmare. It was just two days before arriving on Earth that her father passes away due to the complications of his condition. Just two day, too late. She never even got to say good bye.
Tensions were high when she finally made it to the Coyle estate on the outskirts of London. Her mother, Chelsea, distraught over her husband’s death, demanded to know why Cara hadn’t come sooner. Cara couldn’t exactly tell her mother that she was in another galaxy and need to take a space ship home. No, she had told her parents, prior to the Delta site expedition that she was going to do her post doctorial research in Antarctica studying the cosmos in the sky, where there was no pollution and a clear sky. Cara told her mother that she tried to get home as soon as possible, but she had to wait from transport. She could tell that her mother had not believed her story, that there was something Cara was keeping from her. She hated lying to her.
Cara then exited her bathroom and grabbed her robe, putting in on as she made her way to the kitchen to make herself some tea. She walked the halls remembering the times she spent playing in them as a child. She was all grown up now, but still lived at home, when she was home anyway. While in school, Cara never felt there was any reason to get a place of her own. The house was big enough that she has a whole wing just for her. That wing of the house had been hers for as long as she could remember. The rooms had changed from being play rooms to studies and storage rooms. It helped that she was an only child and never had to share.
As she kept on, Cara noticed a light on in her father’s study. She went closer to the door and casually looked in; her mother was seated at the desk looking over something. “Mum, what are you doing up?”
“Oh, you startled me, darling.” Her mother had said as she held her hand to her chest from the freight. “I could ask you the same thing.”
“The storm woke me, couldn’t get back to sleep. I was going to make myself some tea when I saw the light.” Cara explained.
“Oh, I just made some, if you like, it’s still hot,” Chelsea said pointing to the tray with a teapot on it. Cara smiled and ventured further into the room, to claim her tea. She sat down in the armchair right beside the table where the tray was and proceeded to make the tea, adding the necessary sugar before putting the strainer over top and pouring the team from the pot. From the smell she could tell it was Earl Grey, one of her favorite blends, as well as her mother’s. “I was just looking over something here, someone’s coming by tomorrow to take a look at all this. I couldn’t sleep either. It’s just not the same anymore.”
Cara looked around the room as she sat there lady like, ankles crossed and to the side, as she stirred her tea, letting it cool. Her mind wandered to the funeral earlier that day, or rather yesterday. It all seemed like such a blur and there were so many important people there as well. She heard someone mention that a royal had been there too, but Cara hadn’t paid much attention to whom.
“What are you thinking about?” Cara heard her mother ask. Cara looked up to see her mother looking at her with concern. “Just the day’s events.” She replied. They both sat there for the longest time, not knowing really what to say. Cara was the first to leave, as she headed back up to bed.
