Episode Seven: Reign (Part 1)

[Frank Kepler]

Previously, on Stargate Delta...

The Delta Site's new BC-304 battle cruiser Iliad arrived, bringing with her two surprises - the return of General Connolly, thought to have been killed during the expedition's first day in the Delian Galaxy, and General Jefferson, a no-nonsense talking Marine Lieutenant General who has come to the Delta Site with orders for an all-out assault on the nearby occupied planet of Bactra.

Frank's third briefing of the day took place in the base's science labs with SD-2. The location made sense - all the team members held offices or research labs in the building, and getting them all in one place would sometimes prove itself a challenging task. Once the team had all arrived, Frank kicked things off.

"Not much has changed for you guys and girls since yesterday's briefing. You're still beaming down to the surface in a Humvee column outside the shield, and driving under it's edge and to the power generation plant. One squad of Marines will be providing support; once you get to the plant they'll split up, with one fire team covering the entrance and the other two helping you to fight your way to the generators, where a few sticks of C4 should take care of business."

Of all the teams, this was the one Frank was most worried about. Commander Garcia had been working with the civvies on basic weapons training, and Lt Cooper would be an asset, but still, was sending civilians into a war zone such a good idea? Only time would tell.

"Any questions?"

Joe was sitting listening to General Kepler tell his team what he already knew. Still it was kind of an honor to have the CO of the Delta site come down personally and explain everything. Joe knew that like most of the military that Kepler was most likely thinking that the civies couldn't take care of themselves and before Joe knew his team better was one of them. But after listening to the commander Joe asked the first question "Sir, whats our exit strategy once we take down the generator?" Joe knew it was on everyones mind and he didn't mind being the one to ask.

Ever since Cara had heard of this mission, she had been trying her best not to throw up. Her nerves were starting to act up, so far she had been doing well with staying out of the fire fights. All the weapons training were a blur, and she was sure that she would forget something, like turning the safety off. The only comfort she had at the moment was the walls of her labs, she always felt safe there.

"Exit strategy? We'll be lucky enough if we get there." she thought out loud. Another side effect of her anxiety to be sure. Realizing she said this out loud she pinched the bridge of her nose, "I'm going to need a Valium."

Astra stared stunned at General Kepler after he told them they were going to be beamed down in a humvee to their location as part of this large scale attack. She'd been in skirmishes before with Jaffa and other aliens with the SG team that she had been posted with while at the SGC, but it wasn't anything like what they were planning now.

Astra had weapons training at the SGC and trained with Teal'c when she could and when he was available, as well as keeping up her Krav Maga. Astra had continued weapons training here at Delta as well, she didn't want to lose any of her skills and knew she could use them at any time they were off world.

"Well its good to know we will be covered by marines," she said, her mouth curving at the edge.

'C4 tends to solve everybody's problems doesn't it?' Astra thought to herself.

Astra was getting the impression that the General didn't think they could handle themselves out there in the fire fight because they were civilians. She stood at full height andheld her head proudly.

"I know we can do this job that has been set for us, sir. I trust everybody on the team and know we can do a great job," she said confidently.

Karen was taking slow deep breaths. On one hand, she was used to showing up and being thown around from mission to mission. However, a mission in the Milky Way didn't exactly compare to the Delian Galaxy. She was impressed by General Kepler's explanation. It seemed like everyone here was given a very clear layout of their steps. Except one.

"Sir, do we collect the marine team as we get out or will they be remaining behind for cover?"

Karen wasn't the type to leave people behind. Especially not the ones who were covering her tail on the way in.

Joe could sense the worry in some of the civilians as they were told they had to take out the generator. The biggest hint of course was Cara. Joe understood how they felt, but with the addition of Cooper on the team he had another trained soldier on the team which he was thankful for but still he knew his team was more then prepared. "Don't worry General all of these civilians are more then prepared for combat, I have seen almost all of them fire a weapon and keep cool under pressure. I give them my full vote of confidence. So guys don't worry I know you will be more then ready even if you don't think you are" Joe gave a look at Cara. Joe just gave her a smile showing that he trusted her and the rest of the team.

"Well, I'm glad you're confident. I still don't know the difference between an M4 and a P90, or whatever the bloody hell their called." Cara took her mug of tea and took a drink. It was too early in the morning for this. She prayed that she wouldn't fall flat on her face somewhere during the mission. "But its all for the greater good anyway. Here's to the people of Earth, savior of the Universe and all that jazz." she said saluting with her drink.

She waited to see what else needed to be said in this briefing, than she would hunt down Will O'Malley for something to help calm her nerves, it just wouldn't due for her to freak out or freeze during the mission. Perhaps the adrenalin will just kick in at the right time.

Karen couldn't help her eyes going wide and her eyebrows shooting up at the scientist's comment. 'What was her name?' Karen was amazed at how little the military did to ready the civilians for these types of circumstances. Her only comfort was Captain Skeie. 'He's the commanding officer, he knows his people,' Karen kept chanting in her mind.

She smiled as the scientist drank to Earth; at least there was something they agreed on.

"To Earth."

Sitting on his stool in the science labs, Frank answered the questions being thrown at him by SD-2. "Sir, whats our exit strategy once we take down the generator?" Joe asked. "Once the C4 has been planted, move back to the Humvee's and proceed to a safe distance before detonating the C4, because when that thing goes, we could be looking at a large explosion." Although now as protective as the tanks or APC's the amour columns would be using, the Humvee's would allow the team to get in and out before the enemy knew what hit them

Next was Lt Cooper, only recently assigned to the team. "Sir, do we collect the marine team as we get out or will they be remaining behind for cover?" Frank looked down and consulted his briefing folder. "Once the power plant had been destroyed, drop off a a fire team of four Marines; they'll will remain in the area and keep it secured from enemy counter-attack. Along with the remaining 8 Marines, proceed to the shield generation plant within the city and work your magic again."

Joe had been working with the civvies on basic marksmanship and small-squad tactics, and if they stuck together and kept up with their USMC support, everything should be fine. "We roll out at 1300 hours, any questions?"

"No Sir" said Joe. After hearing the plan Joe really had to think over the details, even though he had trained with his team, they were still civies. Now they smart a hell lot smarter then me but they aren't trained military, still they could kick the ass out of any scientist back at Earth thought Joe to himself as he looked over his team. A smile apeared on his face as he thought back to all the missions he and his team had been on. After thinking about it for a bit Joe was figuring out little details for the mission. Such as what gun to use. Joe decided to take his M4 Carbine.

Astra listened to General Kepler finish answering their questions.

"No questions from me either," Astra added.

'The military seem to like lots of explosives.'

Atra tried not to think about the massive strike they were about to take part in, but she needed to decide which weapons she wanted to use.

'I think I willl take a 9mm and a zat gun,' she thought.

Astra was confident they could do the job, even though she was feeling a little nervous about the whole thing. She hoped that they could pull this off.

Ian sat by the rest of the scientists during this meeting with the general and had stayed silent the entire time. Till he couldn't take it anymore when he just said out loud to his team "This is crazy, I'm with Cara on this one, I feel like an extra from Return of the Jedi."

Pointing at his boss he said with a nod "See she got the reference." Taking a breath and with his hands moving in a no way motion as he rambled and went faster "I mean guys were scientists, sure I can shoot a gun but hit what I'm shooting at that's something else." Ian took a sip from his cup of coffee and thought to himself Come on help a rebellion, fight the hydra and now launch an attack on an alien stronghold, isn't this the flagship teams missions not the science team's.

Frank smiled at the Jedi reference from Ian and Astra; there use of humor broke up the tense meeting, but did perhaps reveal some underlying fears about the mission... Frank pushed the thoughts from his head. Between Joe, Lt Cooper and their Marine escorts, his science staff would be more than safe. Besides, they were his first and only choice for the mission such at this - their translation and science skills couldn't be replaced.

"And on that note, I'll make my leave." Frank consulted his folder one final time. "You all ship out on the Icarus at 1300 hours, best of luck SD-2, you're going to make us all proud." Frank said his goodbyes and left the labs, moving toward his next briefing with SD-3.
