Earth
After a good two weeks of downtime back on the homeworld, Samarra sat in the commissary, looking over some old mission reports that were given to her to prepare her for the mission ahead. In the morning, she would be boarding the Odyessy at 0600, destined for the Ida Galaxy for God only knows how long. Things like this did not bother her, or at least, would not bother her right this very moment, because right now she had updated her iPod with the latest music that she had missed out on when off-world. There were nearly 1,000 new songs on her iPod now. After all, she did not know the next time she would be back on this little blue planet. She had to make it last.
At the moment, her foot was bouncing around madly to the rhythms of some catchy, techno-y little tune that scrolled across the screen. Yes, she knew she would be turning 30 within the next year, but that didn't mean that she had to stick to all 80's mixes. Sometimes, she still felt as though she were 18 years old, partying it up in high school. Ah, those were the days...
As she read and jammed, she would occaisionally lift a spoonful of orange jello to her mouth, another hot commodity that the Delta Site (and she could only assume the Odyessy) lacked. It was her favorite. And she would enjoy these last few hours of Earth.
Thinking back to the past two weeks, she smiled. She had taken a nice drive down to Baja California and spent several days lying in the sand. It was nice to relax and get some sunlight. Something told her that as the new Chief of Intelligence on the Ida Task Force, she would not be seeing very much sunlight for a while. Pushing that out of her mind, she thought of those few nights in the bars there, drinking tequila and talking to some exotic characters. It was nice. It was a drastic change from what became "the norm" for her these past few years. Once again, there was no telling when she would see a beach again.
The song changed to something a bit slower and Samarra looked at the iPod. The battery icon was nearly depleated and she scrunched her nose at this. Oh well, I'll charge it until morning, I suppose, she thought, turning off the power to the device altogether. Pulling the earbuds out of her ears, she heard the sounds of everyday life in the Commissary. Some marines were laughing over in the corner; a waiter dropped a tray of glasses, which shattered beautifully on the tile floor. It went quiet shortly after that, but the commotion soon returned to its normal level. Glancing back down at her files, she sighed. Even though she had been looking at them for quite some time now, she had not actually been reading them. She had been distracted.
It's not like I won't have a good 3 weeks to finish reading these aboard the ship, she thought ruefully, and closed the file, seeing the imprinted emblem of the fallen Icarus on the front..
