"I am Aleksandr Kamarov," the original guy she sat with introduced in what sounded like a Russian accent – pushing up the corners of Sura’s mouth a little. She always enjoyed listening to accents. The Captain was aware that she held a bit of an accent…”Alaskan” if that counted. Of course she sounded normal to herself – but apparently it was something like a Canadian accent – since Alaska is touching Canada…America was just crafty and took it from the Russians.
“Pleased to meet you, Aleksandr Kamarov,” she smiled, liking the way the name sounded. What could she say? She was a sucker for foreign anything. Names, smells, peoples, voices…maybe that’s why she ended up where she was. Captain Ross just enjoyed the different.
"Rank of Praporshchik, I believe your nearest equivalent is 'Chief Warrant Officer Two'. I work on engines of this fine space ship,"
Praporshchik, she thought, I don’t I could even try to spell that…
“Wow,” she commented, raising a brow, “Do you go by your full title or prefer to go by anything shorter? Like ‘Alek’?” she asked, honestly curious. She had met plenty of ‘Michael’s and ‘Anothony’s that were not Mike and Tony. Some people just liked the full versions of their names. Sadly, Sura didn’t have that choice. Sur sounded funny and the remaining syllable sounded like a guttural grunt. One syllable names were horrible to form nicknames from.
"What brings you to Ida Galaxy?" he asked, as Sura continued to enjoy his accent. It was another thing she loved about not staying back in Alaska – she was surrounded by people from other places with different ways of life. It was…fascinating, to say the least.
“Well – my job,” she smirked, resting her head upon the fist of an arm leaning upon the table, “Been moved around a lot, and I guess they decided to throw me here,” she sighed, “I think this might be my favorite so far…and I have to admit it’s my first time in this galaxy,” Ross admitted, glancing out into literal space once again.
“’Bout you?” she asked Alek, raising a brow…even though she knew his answer would be identical to hers - or nearly so.
Oh – if her brother only knew…he’d just pass out of jealousy.
I get to play in space… she thought, mentally mocking her older brother, Pierce, who had been teasing her before she left again, about how he managed to already have a wife and kids, while she kept still getting transferred.
I win.
“Captain Ross, it’s good to see you again” said a familiar Aussie accent, that brought a smile to her face. Her bright eyes shot up over at Andrew Johnson.
“Jooohnnnsoonn…” she replied, eying his camo gear slightly, and noticing a rank change of her friend.
“Whoa there – something I missed. Now you outrank me?” she complained, forcing her voice to sound saddened and even a little hysterical, “Well this isn’t fair, Major…”
“What is your job here?”
Sura took a deep breath, beginning to get annoyed on how many times people asked her that. Reaching into her pocket, she removed a piece of paper and stared at her food for a moment – wondering which would be the best to write with, as she dug through her other pocket, hoping to find something else to write with, so food-writing wouldn’t be necessary.
Yes…
Pulling out a small broken pencil she had never seen in her entire life, she wrote in her slightly messy writing, ”Intel Expert.” before sliding the pencil back into her pocket, ripping the paper to make it smaller, licking the back of the paper, and sticking it to her forehead. Where it stayed.
“There. No one has to ask again,” she smiled, content with her move, as she continued with her meal.
