Helios
Outside the Stargate
The morning had been long thus far, the major already having had to brief two teams on the next mission. While he may have only been in direct command of one team, the fact remained that he was the ranking officer during this little field trip, and thus the responsibility fell on him to make sure that things ran smoothly. They had met a little over two hours earlier in the briefing room, and now they stood right outside of the Stargate on this newly explored world. Captain Ross had dubbed it Helios, although that name didn't seem remotely suitable. The planet's surface, as far as he could see, seemed to be little more than water. The Stargate stood on a small island, an island barely large enough to hold the gate and both teams. As the event horizon closed behind him, Alavair took a quick look around to get his bearings. A few small ships were floating off shore, and with luck whoever they belonged too would be able to help them get their bearings.
Silently giving signals to his team, Alavair raised his shotgun (which had become a trademark of sorts for him), before stepping toward the boats. They seemed to be anchored little over fifty yards from shore, although that was a relatively decent amount of water between them and the boats. Unsure of whether it was safe to swim over to them or not, Alavair exchanged a glance with Captain Ross before making an attempt at contact.
"Hello? Is anyone there?"
No reply came from the boats, and it was only now that the major saw the red splatters on the railings of the closest ship. Red splatters that could only be one thing. Blood. Raising his weapon, Al quickly scanned the horizon for any signs of another ship, searching for something he hoped he wouldn't find. In the distance smoke rose into the morning sky, a sign that a large ship was moving away from them. With luck they wouldn't have to deal with whoever had done this anytime soon. There was no way that he would be telling either team about the blood, not right now anyway. That would just set a bad tone for the mission. Finding Captain Ross' eyes, Al nodded in the direction of the railing. The look on her face was more than enough. Now they both knew, and the party could begin.
"Look alive team.. I don't like this."
