Andy grinned at Astra and ran his fingers through his hair again. "No point in worrying whose fault it was. Let me get it silenced for you."
Without another word, the engineer got himself literally up to the eyeballs in cables. It took him a little under a minute to reduce the volume of the alarm to virtual silence and another minute or so to shut it up completely. He twisted a couple of wires back together again and emerged.
"Not a booby trap as such," he said. "It was the alien equivalent of lighting up a little sign that said 'please do not play around with these wires again."
His radio fizzled into life and he responded, turning away and speaking quietly into it. When he turned back, his eyes were filled with delight, so much so that he looked like nothing so much as an overgrown schoolboy.
"Life support is up and running. We're nearly there. I knew those guys could pull this job together."
Not a hint of the fact that he himself had been awake for hours running on sheer determination. Not a mention of the fact that he'd gone without rest for well into the thirty six hour mark now. He reserved praise for the team. It was his way. "I guess I'd better head back to main engineering and finish off those last little jobs..."
Already he'd drifted off into his distracted little world of a thousand 'little jobs' to get done. He glanced at Honey and Astra, giving the latter another shy smile.
"Try not to play with any more wires if you don't mind, ladies, I'm not sure my eardrums could take another pounding like that. Is there anything else you need me to take a look at whilst I'm here with my manly roll of tools?"
