Episode Twenty Five: Enemy of My Enemy (Part One)

Lucus ducked his head and brought his hand up to protect himself from falling debris as the first claymore landmine was tripped by a Titan soldier. The roar from the explosion was deafening, and for a moment he couldn't hear a thing over the ringing in his head. Shaking his head, the engineer re-orientated himself, looked down into the ambush kill zone, and opened fire.

The element of surprise was on their side. Caught off guard, Titan soldiers had been thrown in all directions by the explosion, and were still a few moments away from organizing a counter attack. This was the perfect opportunity for SD-1 to lay down the hurt and take out as many of the enemy as possible. Gripping his rifle tightly, the New Zealand sailor opened fire, hosing down the enemy positions.

He had been assigned an M249, a squad support weapon light machine gun, and was using it to maximum potential. The large weapon was heavy and hard to move with, but from his prone position overlooking the ambush zone he could lay down a large and sustained volume of fire. The belt-fed weapon blazed away, cutting down Titan soldiers where they stood or driving them to find over and keep their heads down. From next to him, his Olympian 'ally' opened up with his energy weapon, targeting the Titan forces.

Will stared at the Gate and the surronded area. He looked at Travis and shook his head. Even from here withou the aid of binoulars he could see this was going to be costly. He noticed Travis pull the weapon and couldn't agree more on the course of action but foronce was the voice of reason. " Sir don't, as much as I hate to say it we are going to need them" he said glaring at the Titan. "So whats the plan then ?" He asked.

William checked his gear as the first of many explosions went off. The first wave had hit the mines and now were trying to clear them. It was a stupid plan that the Titans came up with but lucklythey were doing most of the work while SD-2 provided the cover fire untill they were through. He heard the first shots fired and it snapped the man in to action, he picked up the heavy machine gun he had with him and while flipping out the stand he laid the weapon on the dirt pile he was hiding behind. "Contacts, Front Left. Twenty Clicks and closing" he yelled tothe others waiting for Travis's orders. He also had the Becons ready incase they needed a fire mission from the Iliad in orbit.

From his elevated position overlooking the ambush zone, Leading Hand Moore continued to pour fire down on the enemy position with his squad support weapon. The light machine gun rattled loudly in his hands, near deafening him, yet he didn't dare stop firing. From early estimates and enemy appeared to have the advantage of superior numbers, so while SD-1 still had the element to surprise on their side it was best to keep up the fight and try to tilt the playing field in their favour as much as possible.

All around the ambush point, members of his team along with their Olympian companions dealt out a hailstorm of bullets, grenades and energy weapons fire. Peering down his sight, Lucas swung his weapon back and forth across the cover behind which the enemy was regrouping. The M249 wasn't quite as accurate as the rifles being used by his team mates, but it high and sustained rate of fire was designed to keep the enemy down and behind cover, allowing SD-1 to control the battle and limit enemy movement.

"So far so good!" he called out, hoping not to jinx the ambush. This was in first time in contact with Titan forces, and so far he was impressed with the way in which SD-1 was maintaining the upper hand. Mind you, it would only take a moment or two for the enemy to regroup and launch a counter-attack, at which would SD-1 would really be tested.

Until then though, Lucas stuck with his task, and hosed automatic fire back and forth across the enemy position, hoping to drive them back or at the very least, keep them from firing long enough to SD-1 to seize victory. This was his first gunfight with his new team, and he hoped to make a good first impression.

The battle was on, Titans and Olympians firing on each other from their positions, and the Titans were taking a pounding from the Olympian position. Davien loaded one of his 15 round stick mags into his rifle and peered down the scope, finding an Olympian and delivering a bullet to the target's head, pushing the bolt of his rifle forward then bringing it back to load in the next round. Finding 4 more targets and putting them out of action permanently, his attention was drawn to a machine gun raining fire upon the Titan troops, bringing the weapon into focus with his scope he noticed the gunner wasn't dressed like the Olympians, and he kind of looked like the guys that were with the Titans. "Could they be a people that are also in a civil war?" he didn't want this to be the case, but he thought maybe if the ones with the Titans win they would want the ones with the Olympians as prisoners. Taking aim at the gun looking for where a well placed shot could disable the weapon, he spotted the firing bolt on the outside of the weapon, taking careful aim if his shot was timed right he could lodge a round inside the gun preventing the bolt from moving and causing the gun to jam, after careful aim he took the shot.

After locking in the next round he went back to picking off Olympians, due to the internal and external suppressor, they wouldn't even hear the shots going off. When possible his Olympian targets were hit in the head, but if their head wasn't visible he would fire through their torso hitting vital organs, even if it wasn't an instant kill, they would be dead soon enough. After the last 10 rounds were fired he quickly went to swapping out the spent mag for a fresh one, which was his last one, after it's locked in he stopped firing at targets but instead went to scouting out the enemy position.

As the first few energy bolts and oddly machinegun rounds blazed into the area in the moments after the blast Calmara knew that there was no more time for discussion. With the forward elements of the titans charging headlong at the ambush, it was time to get stuck in, back up, cover and work together as they had agreed.

Calmara instinctively sought out a covered spot from which he could also provided a reasonable field of fire. “Lets lay down some fire on the Olympian positions, take a bit of heat of those titan up front leading the charge.” He said to Oxford and Stoneman. He levelled his M4 at a pair of Olympian soldiers that were giving a group of titans a hard time, and let off a burst of covering fire. He’d chose his targets deliberately he had no problems targeting Olympians. But he was still avoiding taking shots against anyone carrying a firearm, he was still unsure who was behind them, they could be captured weapons, they could be titan doubles of SD personnel mixing it up causing more havoc, or they could be the real SD personnel helping the Olympians against common enemy.

With them on the higher ground and well dug in Calmara knew he’d have to get creative to dislodge them. He grabbed far a grenade in his vest pocket, first a fragmentation but the with thought of damage to possible friendly’s he hesitated and swapped it out for a flash/bang, loading it to the under barrel launcher sighted the same pair of Olympians and fired. When the grenade went off there subsequent disorientation allowed Calmara time to line up a shot and pull the trigger each one in turn. “Major we’ve got SAW fire coming from the Olympian position, chances are we've got friendly’s on both sides i’d say we risk making radio contact sir.” Calmara yelled over the ever increasing volume as more weapons join the fight. Catching a glimpse of a figure in neither their uniform or the titans or moving from a position close by to a position further toward the Olympian
line he added. "To make things just that little more interesting, than they already are we've got an unknown combatant in the area."

Continuing to lay down fire on the enemy position, Lucas swept his M249 back and forth, hosing down Titans soldiers. With a metallic click the weapon fired it last round, and crawling backward to remove himself from the enemy line of fire, the Kiwi sailor went around reloading his weapon. "Loading!" he called to Captain McKinnon and the Olympian soldiers nearby, just to let them know the reason he'd stop firing. The 'pig' as is was called made one hell of a sound when Moore fired it, and would be missed by his team mates until he could get it back up and running.

Slapping a new magazine into position, he felt the belt of rounds into place, worked the action and was back in business. Crawling back into his old position he readied the weapon, aimed down the optical sight and resumed his fire on the Titans down below in the ambush zone. By the looks of it the enemy had quickly recovered and were starting to get their act back together. The question now was had SD-1 done enough damage to even the fight, or were the Titans about to overrun them.

A metallic click signalled another empty magazine. Ducking back behind cover, Moore was lost for a moment as to how he'd emptied the weapon so quickly. He tried to remove the empty magazine but was unable to, and looking down noticed that something foreign was lodged into his firing bolt. He tried for a minute to remove it, noting that it didn't look like an empty round. Whatever had jammed up his gun, it hadn't come from him. Lucas tried a few more times to forcibly remove the strange object before giving up and returning to his position.

With the big gun out, he had little choice by to draw his sidearm and fire down into the ambush point. For good measure he tossed down a couple of grenades to try and make the enemy think twice about any sort of counter attack. "Stoppage!" he called out to his team mates, letting them know the M249 was out of commission.

Even as Kim covered Lucas's back she had a inking something was seriously wrong here with the picture, over what reason she had no idea or even why. As her mag from her weapon came to the end, she discarded the used one over her head nearly hitting Jerry as he had made his way over with his Olympian counterpart, "What's the news?" he asked as he got ready to fire as well.

"Titans forces ahead and more coming like flood," she slammed the new mag into the slot and fired, "if these idiots don't stop arriving, we may have to line out more wires."

Jerry knew it was time to change tactics and soon. This way they really would be outnumbered somehow. There had to be a chance where they could gain upper hand somehow. "Any bright ideas?" he asked Kim as he threw firing shot as well. Then looked over to make sure that there were no Titans over where Moore was.

Will nodded at James "Roger that sir" he said and started to pick off olympian positions with as much accuracy as someone using a HK 416 machinegun. The rifle recoiled back into his soulder with each burst of fire he made, turning towards Olympians that gave away thier positions. Then a few shots came at him, bulliets not energy weapons, at which he ducked from. Looking at Travis and James he yelled at them, "Taking too much fire here sir, I'm going to pop smoke" he said picking up two of his four smoke granades. He pulled the triggers and looked at the two men before raising and throwing the two grenades which started to pour out white smoke. Will then grabbed the AT - 4 and smiled "Told you we would need this" he said then before he could fire it James voiced his doubt that their enemy was entirely Olympian. He put down the AT - 4 and picked up his rifle again "Okay Sergeant, give it a go. I'll give you some cover" he said to James Firing a burst at some Olympians that ventured through the smoke.

Travis listened to both men give in their inputs which was always had been welcome, and knew himself that they needed them, but it was something he wasn't easily letting go. And it was one of those moments where he wish he could just throw the grenade and be done with. Perhaps he would bet his chance soon enough. Lowering his weapon, he frowned at the man before him, "One wrong more and I'll shoot you dead," he warned.

Hearing Will's question, Travis ordered for a moment, "We will take out many Olympians as we can. And try contacting delta if the planet makes it possible to do so." After that take care of the Titan if the time allows.

He heard Will shout out the incoming contacts and doubled his pace with Kiros at his side, "Will, find out friends or foe. Make contact if they are friends," he shouted as he ducked over the incoming fire over his head while getting his weapon ready for use again.

"James -" he turned and cut of when he found the Master Sergeant two steps ahead of and twitched his lips at what he said afterwards, "I can't agree more." he spoke as he took care of few Olympians himself in took cover and listened to what he said, "Wait," he blinked for a moment, "SAW fire?" he risked a look over towards where the fire was coming from, "How the heck...." he trailed off before it him, "Damn it, Garcia. You're more trouble then your worth." So was the man's wife, shaking his head, things just got better and better, didn't they?

Clicking his radio, he nodded at James to try making contact as well, "Sierra Delta Oxford to Sierra Delta Garcia, Do you copy?" Getting a statics he tried again.

Averting his gaze to find Will, "Stoneham, friendly's on the other end, be careful not to shoot them."

Another piece of news had him groaning; Garcia on the other end was clueless about SD-2 being around and now they had an unknown with them, "Hold fort," he ordered, then moved along with the Titan leader at his heels to the place where James suspected the unknown was. Walking in the middle of the firefight like this was insane, but he was already insane as it was. Reaching the shrubs, he began to poke the branches with his gun end to see if anyone was there.

[Marcus Garret]

Marcus had been carefully sighting on and taking out Titan heavy weapons and sniper teams, doing his best to keep them from setting up. While scanning for more targets in another area, he spotted someone setting down what he would have sworn was an AT-4. He narrows his eyes, and begins scanning more carefully, taking careful note of uniforms and weapons. A few moments later, he saw Major Oxford walk off to the side.

“Shards…” he mumbles under his breath. The Olympian sniper beside him is too busy firing on targets to notice.

He toggles the earpiece and speaks, “Check fire! Check your targets! Sierra Delta team downrange!” Forgetting to turn off the mic, he lets out a loud expletive before remembering and turning it off.

He glances over at his counterpart on the hill, wondering if he should share this knowledge.

An idea occurs to him that maybe he could use the spare earpiece he’d pocketed to get a signal over the normal radio net. Maybe not one that could be responded to, but one that the other team could hear. He sets down the rifle and scoots down the hill, out of the firing arc, and pulls out the spare earpiece and a radio. He quickly jury-rigs something that might break through whatever jamming was in place, and tests it by toggling the mic on and off. Hearing the squawk tone come over the radio on his shoulder, and not a burst of static, he toggles the mic on the makeshift communicator.

“Sierra Delta Garret to probable Sierra Delta Team Two, transmitting in the blind. Unlikely you can respond. Friendlies scattered among Olympian force. Stand by.”

He toggles off the radio, wondering how they would find a way for the two teams to rendezvous with each other. He toggles his earpiece.

“Eraser to team, we’ve got friendlies down range. I may have rigged a way to get a message to them. Please let me know if any of y’all have any ideas. I’m fresh out.”

The ‘hold fort’ order was a simple enough one. Calmara glanced over at Oxford making his way to the unknown combatant. Now the trick was to trim the Olympian ranks while avoiding any hits on SD-X team, whoever they were, at present the only way to differentiate was energy and projectile weaponry.

Thankful with Stoneman on the machinegun was giving him a certain amount of cover to operate under. A few Olympians were crouching behind cover unable to return fire because of the gun. Enabling Calmara to manoeuvre into a position where he could get a shot on each one of them. The Olympian ranks were now down by another three.

Spotting another opportunity he co-ordinated his fire with Stoneman “Stoneman adjust your fire, we’ve got a group of about three or four roughly one o’clock behind heavy cover. You take’em down I’ll mop up.” The air force sergeant repositioned himself again and opened up on his target knowing that heavier fire was not far away.

As a slightly broken radio transmission came through from Lt. Garret which seemed to confirm that the team on the hill was in fact SD-1. As was said it was unlikely a reply would get though, Calmara ducked down and went ahead and attempted to transmit a message anyway. “Lt. Garret from Sergeant Calmara, copy your message, send to your TL recommend RV ASAP.” In case that message failed to get through Calmara ignited a flare and tossed it up and over his head, it coming so soon after the receiving Garrets radio message would indicted they had received and were complying with it. He glanced again in Oxford direction, he knew Koios had followed him in and with the unknown combatant, he felt it best checking at regular interval to see if he Maj. Oxford needed cover of some description.

< Continued from Lost City of Akrotiri >

Three X-305 shuttles escorted by two F-302s - piloted by Captain Cromin and First Secretary Shutlz - quickly burned through the upper atmosphere and dove toward the planet's surface. They'd received coordinates for the approximate touchdown location of SD-2's shuttle from the USS Iliad, and upon discovering the shuttle had move into a search pattern, hoping to locate SD-1 and SD-2 before enemy forces did.

From their position high above the surface, they were able to spot both conventional and energy weapons fire from some distance away. Having locked on to what they assumed to be SD-1 and SD-2 fighting against a Titan force, the colonel was shocked to see the Olympian soldiers had also joined into the fray. The shuttle and her fighter escorts swooped down over the battlefield, unable to distinguish friend from foe.

"Hold your fire," Troy said over his radio headset to Robert and Tim; until they could figure out who was who it was too risky to open fire. Standing at the cockpit doorway, the colonel looked through the forward window at the wild battle below. From up here, it actually looked as though the SD teams were fighting each other, and that the Titans were battling the Olympians. What is the name of...

"Sir, we've got radio chatter below. Off-world team frequencies," announced the co-pilot, who feed to radio transmissions into the ships internal speakers. The cockpit and cabin suddenly came to life with a mix of yelling and gunfire. Over the loud explosions it was possible to pick up two distinctive voices - that of Lieutenant Garret from SD-1, and that of Master Sergeant Calmara from SD-2. The two men appeared to have only just opened communications, and were organizing to disengage from the fight and regroup.

While the situation didn't make much sense, the colonel knew he needed to act, and act swiftly. "All Sierra Delta teams, this is Sierra Delta Actual," he said over the secure radio channel, identifying himself as the expedition leader. "Disengage from the enemy and rally up three hundred meters due south. The cavalry is here!" Pointing out the forward window, Troy pointed out a clearing three hundred meters of the battle zone, a safe place from which they could put down the three shuttles, recover the teams and get the hell out of here.

Davien saw the end of a rifle being pointed through the brush at him, he lightly grabbed the end of it and moved it slightly so it wasn't pointing at him, looking at Travis he held up his other hand as a sign to not shoot, before releasing the end of the gun. "I'm sure if I was in your position you'd do one of two things, shoot me or order me down on the ground. But seeing as you and your friends are fighting your friends, and I've been helping you against the Olympians, though most of it was pay back. I want to ensure you, I'm a friend, I disabled that machine gun which was manned by one of your friends. I say this because, I need your help, my home world needs help, and I will be happy to explain when this little mishap of a firefight is over. You don't have to believe me, but just trust me." he was taking a risk, putting his hope in the hands of a stranger that could shoot him dead there and now, and if that happened then his world was doomed and he would have failed. He kept both of his hands up and away from his sniper rifle which was still set up in a position to allow him to view the battle field, it was loaded, but he wasn't planning on using more ammo. "Please, I offer my assistance to you in whatever your mission against the Olympians you are conducting, and all I ask in return to help me and my people." staring at Travis as he sat there, waiting for a response from the man, or to be shot, but he wasn't that stupid, he did have a back up plan set up and hidden so that if the man was going to kill him, he wouldn't go out without some kind of fight, but hopefully it wouldn't come to that.

With his SAW having been taken out of commission by a strange enemy projectile - that didn't appear to be Titan or Olympian - Lucas had fallen back to his sidearm and his limited amount of grenades in order to hold his own during the fierce ambush. The engineer had laid out all his C4 and landmines before the battle had started, and was beginning to run low on his sidearm's ammo. While he hoped the battle would have been over by now, it looked as though the enemy was regrouping and about to overrun them. His first mission with SD-1 was not going smoothly at all.

His radio crackled to life, and Moore just assumed it would be a fallback order from Commander Garcia. While SD-1 had set up and executed a near-perfect ambush, their enemy had been quick to establish their position and set up for a counter-offensive. In fact, Moore's assumption was far from the truth.

Lieutenant Garret, a member of SD-1, had opened a channel through the electronic jamming, calling out to a hidden off-world team. Lucas' first reaction was that there must be a back-up or reserve team out there, moving in to assist SD-1. The hidden team identified themselves as SD-2, and it was around this time that it dawned on Lucas that they'd allied themselves with the very Titans that SD-1 was fighting. Unknowingly, both teams had been engaging each other!

As he took a moment to process all this, two fast moving objects swooped down low and loud across the battle field - F-302 fighters. They were followed by three slower moving shuttles, which circled the ambush area before settling down nearby. Colonel Loveridge, the expedition leader, opened a channel to both teams from the lead shuttle, requesting they pull back and make their way to the rally point for recovery.

"Doesn't have to tell me twice," the engineer said out aloud. The Olympian behind him turned, having heard the transmission, and began to raise his weapon. The best alternative would have been to strike out at the man and try to knock him out, but the Kiwi was too far away. With no other option he opened fire on his former 'ally', who dropped to the ground. "C'mon," he called to the nearby Captain McKinnon as he turned and began to make his way to the awaiting shuttles.

[Tim "Freefall" Shultz]

The city had come to the planet that SD-1 and for some reason SD-2 had come too. The USS Illiad had the indercation that SD-2 was down there somewhere. The Lt Colonel took a group of Expidition members into three of the 305 shuttles as Tim and Robert flew cover for them in thier 302's. Once through the atmosphere Tim started to pick up a lot of chatter on the general frequency. Tim heard the orders and awaited till hios own turn. "Sierra Delta Actual, Freefall. Ready for straffing run at your request" he said as he identified the SD team positions from thier chatter.
