History
Personal History: Vanessa was born on July 23rd, 1981 to Chief Petty Officer Isaac José Robinson and Shizuka Izumi Kawaguchi at 1:33 pm in Ebina Hospital. Her early years were marked with a yearning for high educations, excellence in sciences, history, English as well as all forms of Japanese. She was taught to honor her heritage and her ancestors – no matter from which side of her family they come from. She was truly a daughter of two worlds, and she enjoyed every second of it. When she was fifteen, her father retired from the Navy and the family migrated to the United States of America for a time. The commute between Ayase and Ebina in Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan had been difficult on the family and young Vanessa. It was there, in the States, specifically the East coast, New York, New York that she began to spread her wings. Growing up in one of New York City’s many boroughs was a jarring experience for the outgoing, but, shy Natsuki Momoko Robinson. Her home of Ebina moved at a slower pace and was far friendlier than the indifferent, disassociated Brooklyn she now lived in. But, as time passed, Natsuki adjusted. Around this time, she began using her English name, in honor of her Grandmother (on her father’s side) and because she found it was often far easier for her peers to relate to her.

It wasn’t until her junior year at James Madison High School that she truly grew into her own and blossomed. Having spent two years in the Humanities house, as well as a myriad of clubs, she really blossomed into something marvelous. Her time in the States offered her a view of a different cultures, with different beliefs and a way of thinking. Though, she didn’t realize it at the time, this simple fact fascinated her endlessly, even as she slowly allowed herself to be assimilated into the American lifestyle. When she graduated on June 6th, 2002, she did so with honors and a ranking of the top twenty percent of her class. Having taken part in various clubs, volunteered for various Nonprofit Organizations and charities, she had well-rounded herself and was scouted by a couple of schools.

That summer, she returned to Japan to visit with her relatives and decided over the course of the three months that she would instead, attend college there. She felt (and her family on her mother’s side agreed) that the colleges and universities were more academically challenging than what most colleges and universities could offer in America. Not only that, it would put her in close connection to her family and roots, which they felt should be upheld. There was little protest from her immediate family.

From the outset, Vanessa had two universities in mind: Chiba University and Kanazawa. She applied to both and after a nervous two months, she was accepted to both. After a little bit of inner turmoil, Vanessa decided on Chiba University as she felt it had a better Anthropology program. 5 years later, she would graduate with her Masters Degree in Anthropology, specializing in four areas: cultural, linguistic, medical and applied anthropology. She immediately began working towards her Doctorate in her chosen field of science. A year into her journey, one of her thesis papers caught the eyes of the United States Army and she was asked to join their revolutionary Human Terrain Teams. Immediately, she jumped at the chance to test out certain theories she had, see new cultures and try to understand the soldier. She had a wide range of military divisions to choose from, but, eventually decided upon the 10th Mountain because of its focus on Afghanistan.

Personality Synopsis: Vanessa has been observed to have various charming and otherwise tendencies that have left those she interacts with puzzled and intrigued. Outwardly, she is an outgoing an extroverted young woman who has an unquenchable lust for life and inextinguishable zeal. She takes to her chosen scientific field of anthropology with the same zeal and intensity of a religious devout. Of course, this analogy can only be used when understanding that Vanessa has spent much of her academic career studying such peoples. She needs answers to unanswerable questions. It is not surprising at all that she can be very single-minded when it comes to her research or assignment. It is only then, when she has her mind wrapped around her latest dilemma, that she becomes terse, distant and arrogant.

However, she is also surprisingly nonchalant and laid-back when it comes to her academics. Where others studied, she spent her time doing other more proactive things. This makes her very atypical among the intellectual community. The core of Vanessa is a skeptical and critical being that needs to understand everything around her to make sense of it. If she does not understand it, it makes her standoffish. To this end, she can be very open-minded to new things and ideas. She has been known to go out of her way to make a new friend, crack and joke, party and generally cut loose, all the while making references and taking notes of the people around her.

Conversely, she is also very sarcastic and cynical. She has the same "enlisted" humor her father had when she was growing up and is not above cracking vile, inappropriate jokes or making references. She has also been observed to have an attraction – unconscious or conscious – to both sexes; however, it is benign, as her moral beliefs restrict her from acting on same sex desires.

Two miles north of Orgun, Afghanistan

Boredom wrought its way across her beautiful features as hazel eyes dimly scanned the horizon. For as far as she could see earth met sky and nothing else. Surrounding her, in every possible direction was sand. The stifling heat of the arid Iraqi dessert cooked her like a thanksgiving turkey in its oven. If she was not in full battle dress, tactical vest and wearing that cumbersome helmet, she still would have been hot. Even so, she would not wish to be anywhere else. The three months she had been in Iraq, attached to the 10th Mountain were some of the best experiences of her life. Yes, she could count a dozen or so bad experiences – some she wished to not even recall, but the majority were all pleasantly memorable. She had met so many interesting people and done things she had never dreamed of. She had discovered a lot about herself, her limits and what she was capable of.

This, however, was something else entirely. From inside the HMMWV she felt something in the air. And it did not sit right with her. The soldiers who flanked her on either side kept gripping their rifles too tightly. The overall mood in the vehicle was tense at best; so thick and palpable was it, that Vanessa more than once had the urge to grab it and toss it out the window. She didn’t understand how these soldiers thought. To her, this was just another mission. All they needed to do was venture deep into the mountains of northern Iraq, far past the safety of the UN militaries. Once they had reached their destination: a village rumored to have ties with members of the Insurgency and Al Qaeda, they would get out, sweep the village while her, their commanding officer, 2nd Lt. Wentworth and their translator visited the leader or leaders of that village. Her role was a simple and straight forward one: collect data on the village and observed. If, at any point, she felt they were being lied to she was to signal Lt. Wentworth, who would take actions of his own. It seemed easy enough to her. No cause for such a heavy pall.

But, maybe they knew something she did not? Or maybe they were worried because they were so deep behind enemy lines? Either way, she could not deny that their mood wasn’t having an adverse effect on hers. Despite her best defenses, she was quickly losing her cool. Nervousness would only lead to errors, which could get people killed. Vanessa did not want that and so she swallowed hard. To distract herself, she returned to watching the emptiness of the dessert pass them by. There was nothing but sand, dry, cracked earth and distant mountains. An idle hand rose to brush aside several rogue strands of her black/brown hair. She began thinking about anything that would help reign in her growing negativity. She thought about ancient cultures. She thought upon her favorite movies. She thought of home. She thought of her dog. She even began making comparisons and analogies of her experiences to current-generation video games she had played. Truthfully, some of the firefights she had been in (as few and far between as they were) were almost too surreal. It was like they were levels straight out of a Call of Duty game or SOCOM 2. Hell, some of the moments reminded her of Halo and Halo 2, though she couldn’t rightly figure out why. Was it because the soldiers she sat beside and those not among the living had so valiantly fought to protect their friends? Had it been their willingness to protect her? Their selfless actions much like those hallowed actions of the fictitious Master Chief Petty Officer John-117?

Vanessa didn’t know, nor fully understand, she quickly realized and it bugged her incessantly.

Before long they were driving through a mountain range, whose name she had forgotten. She had been placed in the middle HMMWV out of the five that made up the convoy. That fear she had felt in the desert hadn’t lessened, but she’d grown used to it. Much like how people develop ways to block out physical pain, she began repressing her own negative thoughts and feelings as well as those that rolled off of the six occupants of her HMMWV. It made her frown and she couldn’t have been more thankful when the soldier next to her, Corporal Hernandez, began singing in his native tongue. Though, her spirits were dropped slightly, when she quickly realized that his song sounded a lot more like a funeral dirge than something that was supposed to instill hope and courage. Of course, none of the other soldiers spoke any Spanish, so it really didn’t matter to them. In the end, Vanessa ended up shaking her head. It was all she could really do.

An explosion rocked her from whatever thoughts she might have had. The dying screams of innocent soldiers stained her consciousness as she watched the HMMWV ahead of hers flip and erupt into flames. Horrified, but unable to look away, she watched as the vehicle tumbled over the edge of the slope and down its side until it slammed into a jutting boulder where it came to its final rest. The soldiers in her HMMWV awoke from their slumber. In their vehicle, the Specialist who drove quickly swerved to avoid the incoming rocket-propelled grenade. Though there were only six in the truck, it felt like thousands were screaming in Vanessa’s ear. As the humvee skittered to the left and then darted back towards the right, Vanessa felt panic – true panic well up inside her. It seized her soul and held fast with its cold, slimy claws. She knew how useless she was in this situation. Unlike the soldiers who sat around her, she was not useful in combat. She had just learned how to shoot, and wasn’t even allowed to take her firearm into the field yet. Her life rested in the hands of the Specialist who deftly avoided RPG round after RPG round. But, he was only preventing the inevitable.

The RPG soared through the air, whistling joyfully as it slammed into the ground and left rear tire of the humvee Vanessa rode in. The subsequent blast rocked the humvee, before gouging out a portion of the back panel. The truck violently flew into the air before slamming into the ground hard. But, that wasn’t the worst of it. Once it reconnected with the earth it began to tumble in an altered trajectory. Violently, the humvee flipped end-over-end until it came to a rest some several hundred feet away from the remnants of their convoy, lying on its roof. Throughout all of this, Vanessa had let out a terrified scream that hadn’t stopped until she passed out shortly before the HMMWV came to a rest. When she came to, she was propped against the back of a tall boulder, about three yards from the overturned humvee. Dazed, she looked around and saw the soldiers who she’d rode with returning fire. But, she couldn’t tell where or who they were shooting at. She suspected it didn’t matter much. If their attackers didn’t get scared and flee, they would be in serious trouble. Lowering gaze, she saw a motionless and prone Cpl. Hernandez. Somehow, she had yet to realize he was dead and in her haze moved to shake him from his slumber. But, when she did a stray bullet from up high struck him in his sternum. She yelped again. Tears freely streamed down her face as she cradled herself behind her rock. She did not dare to move, but she couldn’t help but look around her.

What she saw sickened her: bits of burning cars and bodies lay strewn and scattered across the rocky field. Haphazardly, the surviving soldiers in the remaining two humvees had formed a perimeter around those who had lived from their wreckages. Mounted gunners operated the 50 cal., raining a hail of hot lead down the enemy’s throats. For thirty minutes various US Army personnel were struck. Occasionally, an RPG would be fired from up high and the soldiers would scatter. But, eventually, the attackers fled and the soldiers were left to gather their dead and wounded. Vanessa, who felt hollow, remained staring at the limp, motionless body of the Corporal, even as his friends came to his side. When they picked him up, she was seized with a powerful desire to help them and rose to her feet. But, she remained standing for only a short while. Within seconds she had slumped back to the dirt beneath her, her knees having buckled. Arms slacked to her sides, palms up, she stared off into distant the mountain range silently sobbing. Why did they have to die?

Sorry for the double post, but I've got a question: what is the current in-game year? I looked at the Deltasite timeline for clues, but it hasn't
t been updated since January.

Awesome, but isn't the fact that my bio is set 1-2 years in the future a problem? Well, its not really, y'know, just push her birthday back to '81 and change "Iraq" to "Afghanistan"... Anyways! Sweet! I'll be sure to head right over once I'm finished.

Edit: Added Avy and Sig and reset birthdate and years back by two. I'm all set!
