“I’m a doctor who can help,”
Charlie looked up to see who had spoken. He looked familiar but it took a moment to place the face. Doctor...O'Malley. Cute. He hadn't been around in a while. Note to self: totally hit on him sometime, she thought wryly. If you're still alive, natch.
"Awesome," she passed him the blood kit and scanner.
Quote:
“So you want to run a basic blood panel on the infected blood?”
She nodded, slowly peeling off her glove now that she was out of contact with the medical supplies. "We should get samples from a couple of the locals, all team members who got sent down first, and you new guys. You have the least chance of being infected. Then we can compare and see if anything weird flags up. Should probably get a couple people started on basic antibiotics, too, to see if it's something they can clear up."
She noticed a woman setting up a lab kit and it was all she could do to not go over there and freakin' high five her, infected or not. She settled for calling 'thanks, dude' across to her.
Quote:
“What’d you figure out Charlie?”
Charlie nodded towards the ancient scanner. "I was thinking we could use the basic facilities on that but since we have a lab kit, we should be able to do something more in depth. Can you grab a blood kit and test the rest of the team?" she made sure her tone said 'only if you want to'. She wouldn't blame Demetri if he didn't want to go out into the creepyassed fog. At all.
Just then Atalya appeared, shepherding a family their way. The kids were in a pretty bad way. "Hey Atalya, long time no see. Do us a favour? Grab a couple morphine shots and give 'em to the kids. That must hurt like a bitch." She started to put a fresh pair of gloves on, double layering, hoping it would be alright for her to touch the medical supplies once that was done.
She got a blood kit for herself and started looking for the best people to test. "Remind me to not be a doctor after this," she said dryly, looking around for Jazzy who had seemingly disappeared.

"OK calm down," the Chief Science Officer scolded, causing Riley to rein in her fear a bit. No need to make a fool of herself on her first ever offworld venture. "Yes, bad choice of words on my part about the Nidhogg but take a breath." Inhaling, then releasing it, she had to admit it did make her feel a bit better. She couldn't help but wonder if he was speaking from experience.
"One, check your scans. No lifeforms aboard." Looking down at her scanner, she switch it to a different scanning setting, from energy to lifesigns. Oh, hey! Look at that! See, nothing to worry about. For a moment, she felt a little surge of relief. That almost, finger numbing sense of tingly relief. Almost to the point that she did not realize he was leading her towards the hatch. "Two, we all have weapons to protect ourselves if something crazy happens." With that, she felt kind of silly for her earlier comment. Yes, in order to be admitted to the program, she had to undergo basic handgun training. It was another one of those things she had to get used to. Before this, she had never fired a gun, aside from a flare gun. And as if that didn't make her feel small enough, Ian added, "And three, this is the job if you can't handle this then head on back to Earth and stop wasting my time, thank you."
Stopping right where she stood, she looked at Ian who didn't seem to care much about how he just came off. Her brows knit together in a mix of disgust and hurt. 'Well, excuuuuuse me if I don't want to be the first to touch the creepy, alien spacecraft!' she thought, unable to voice her outrage. It had always been a shortfall of hers. She needed to learn to stand up for herself. Back at NASA, she was a pretty girl...compared to the other stereotypical, astrophysicist weirdos, so she never really had anyone to pick on her over anything, except her size. Luckily, Ethan spoke up.
"Why don't you take it easy on her? Riley's new to this; don't you remember how terrifying all this is?" Ahhhh, so boss-man did used to be scared of this! It made her feel a little bit better on the inside. Ethan guided her away from the hatch and handed her the handgun from her holster. "You guys should probably stand back, just incase. It's not like we know what this thing is actually doing. Going up and just opening it may not have been the best idea, but Wright's in charge."
"Really, I had no idea," RJ replied with her own sarcastic mutter, brooding just next to Ethan and watching as he moved closer to the craft with Ian. Standing over by Troy, who seemed to tower over her (though most people did, its just his whole 'military' appearance added to it). Not to mention, his gun was much, much bigger than the one she held. That was some comfort.
"I don't have a good feeling about this..." she murmured, keeping her gun lowered, safety on. In her other hand, she monitored the scanner. She knew now that many aliens had many different properties, including flesh eating and being generally frightening. She couldn't help but wonder...was hibernation among their many features?

OOC: Just matching up our timestamps Mallala Outskirts of Underground Village 1336
Ian looked over at Ethan quizzicaly not sure on what he meant what he had said to Riley it was how he spoke all the time not really to different. He for one knew how terrifying this job was getting tortured by Greek gods, thrown across the room by alien pink claw monsters, oly thing he was trying to be was get her to focus and not be scared or at least thta was what he was trying for. Then he noticed the hurt and disgust look the young girl was giving the current CSA and he had to think that he had said the wrong thing.....again. Great job fearless leader once again insert foot into your gaping mouth Ian scolded himself as he took a step away from them not like he could make it worse. Again without Vanessa around to put out the fires it would really be nice if she was but no luck on his own.
With his scanner back out checking for any harmful things like radiation and such best to check before going aboard nothing registered so far at least. Ian ignored what the rest of the team was doing behind him, he had bigger fish to fry because whatever this ship was doing here might be effecting the village and it wasn't helping scans either so the sooner it goes down the better Wright would feel.
Quote:
"I'll see if there's an external source for that signal that we can shut down. If the inside of this thing's safe maybe Jahzara can go in and see if there's anything decipherable?"
Ian had to agree that was a pretty good idea and McKay would say rookies do not have any good ideas. He told him so over his shoulder "Good idea Ethan, you and Riley lok around out here, I'll check the inside for the bridge and see if there is anything else happening in there that." He made his way towards the hatch and turned to add with "Keep radios open, just to be safe, also I just thought the plague might be caused by some kind of leak from the ship effecting there water supply so just be careful."
<Tag Team>
Ian pulled out out his flashlight and flicked it on for the darkness inside the ship and which then he asked "Dr. Jaarsveld which you like to come along." He asked her because ok on one hand he did not want to go alone into the dark ship yes he was a hypocrite and also he could not read the alien script very well without his computer and maybe she could it would be a lot easier that way.

Mallaa Outskirts of Underground Village Crashed Nidhogg Vessel 1336
Troy stood silent as Ian explained to him the horrors of the Nidhogg species. "Brilliant," he muttered to himself, taking a few steps closer to the vessel. Right not this crashed heap of space junk was the only clue they had in solving the medical mystery that was affected the people of this planet, and like it or not they were sooner rather than later going to have to open the vessel up and see what it was inside. While there may be some of those nasty bugs waiting inside to tear them limb from limb, there might also be the cause and cure of the illness. The rewards were worth the risk.
"I'll check it out," the Colonel announced, flicking the safety off the weapon and moving carefully toward the ship. Ian moved up with him, and when Troy dragged open the hatch the scientists peered inside with his flashlight. "No bugs yet," Troy said quietly, stepping into the hallway heading to the bridge. "Dr. Jaarsveld which you like to come along," Ian suggested when he saw the alien texts written on the walls and control panels of the ship.
Weapon ready, Troy moved slowly forward through the ship, clearing each room and hallway as he went. Using the light on the side of his rifle he scanned the darkened room, and while he was glad they hadn't yet run into any Nidhogg he imagined that would all soon change. He approached the doorway to bridge and paused for a moment, listening for noises. When all was silent he swung the door open and stepped inside.
He saw two bugs at the controls of the ship and raised his rifle, but didn't fire when he noticed both were death. The front's of their bug-like heads were smashed in; they must had head butted the bulkhead when they crashed and died from head injured. Their bodies were starting to break down, and it looked as though they'd been here for a couple of weeks. "Got something in here," he called to Ian and Jahzara.

Keep radios open, just to be safe, also I just thought the plague might be caused by some kind of leak from the ship effecting there water supply so just be careful."
Well, that does indeed make sense. If this ship had indeed been here for longer than a few days, it was quite possible for some chemical from the alien vessel to have soaked down into the groundwater and, essentially, to the underground dwellers whose skin was now falling off. Double ew.
Taking his suggestion, she altered the sensor to detect water, targeting that which seeped into the underground aquifers. Sure enough, she could detect the aquifer itself, but there was a dark spot on the sensor, detecting a chemical that was not H2O.
"There's a change in the groundwater about 70 yards that way," she told Ethan, motioning for him to change his sensors as well. "Perhaps a fuel capsule was ejected from the vessel before it crashed, or was separated on re-entry. Either way, Ian's right. The foreign chemical could be harmless to these..Hogg...things, but deadly to the natives here." Walking towards the dark spot on the sensor, she did her best not to trip or fall into anything hidden in the fog. The further she got away from the vessel, the better.
<Tag Ethan>
As she walked on, struggling with the forest topography in places, she supported herself on several trees on her way down the slope. As she grew closer to the dark spot, she noticed the bark on the trees became more brittle and left remnants on her gloves. Showing this to Ethan as they walked, she said, "I think we're getting closer."
<Tag Ethan>
No sooner had she said than than she heard a disgusting squish sound and looked down at her boots. A squishy, lime green goo pooled on the ground and now covered the soles of her boots. Bingo. Looking up and inching her way further on, she saw a darkened mass. Upon closer inspection, it seemed to be of the same organic material used by the ship that the others were investigating.
-Doctor Wright, Ethan and I found a pod that is oozing some...some really gross goo stuff. We're going to gather samples of it and take it back to the medical team to see if they can confirm anything. Do you know if they're on this channel? Because we may want them to go ahead and gather their own samples of the water in the caves to compare to this...stuff.- Yeah, super-professional. 'Stuff' and 'really gross goo' were proper nomenclature, surely. Looking back at Ethan, she waited for a response...hoping this stuff wasn't burning through the soles of her shoes.

With being thrown into the cave of illness, it wasn’t too long before he found himself holding a blood kit and scanner, after Charlie replied to his motion to help with a single word. "Awesome.”
Pulling off her glove, the medically inclined civilian revealed a wound on her hand, which resembled that of the skin-issued natives. He fought a frown across his features, before forcing himself not to look. This was a bad sign. It wasn’t something that was over time – but spreading. So much for the slight hope that they were drinking dirty water…
"We should get samples from a couple of the locals, all team members who got sent down first, and you new guys. You have the least chance of being infected. Then we can compare and see if anything weird flags up. Should probably get a couple people started on basic antibiotics, too, to see if it's something they can clear up,” she explained, causing the Major to nod, as he wrapped a tourniquet around his own arm. Honestly…he had extracted his blood far too many times. Before he was in the environment too long, it simply made sense to take the blood asap. With a tube filled with his blood, the Major kept the blood on hand, before muttering, “Where’s my cookie and orange juice?” under his breath, in his normal British accent, with a smile.
As Will worked his way over to a nearly skinless native, he peered over his shoulder to see a highly tattooed and pierced child, asking Charlie what she had figured out, "I was thinking we could use the basic facilities on that but since we have a lab kit, we should be able to do something more in depth. Can you grab a blood kit and test the rest of the team?"
His attention was pulled away by a local that had grabbed onto his arm – horror causing their eyelids to pull away from their eyes. “It hurts…”
Their nails began to dig into O’Malley’s arm, until he mildly violently pulled his arm back, shaking it slightly. The indentation from their nails slowly turned red. Awesome. Blood. Now he was infected [most likely]. Bloody brilliant.
“Frakkin’…” he began, taking an odd amount of joy taking their blood. It was never a good sign when it was therapeutic to stab someone with a needle.
"Remind me to not be a doctor after this," Charlie muttered, as she set off to test people around the cave as well.
“Only if you remind me not to come back if I’m nice and comfortable at home,” he smiled, his accent slurring slightly as he concentrated on keeping the pain to the infected the lowest amount possible.
After taking a few samples, he scanned and tested them, before taking another sample from himself – though he made sure it was only enough. No sense in making himself pass out.
His radio buzzed to life. -Doctor Wright, Ethan and I found a pod that is oozing some...some really gross goo stuff. We're going to gather samples of it and take it back to the medical team to see if they can confirm anything. Do you know if they're on this channel? Because we may want them to go ahead and gather their own samples of the water in the caves to compare to this...stuff.- "We here you," Will spoke into his radio, "We already have someone headed towards you to take blood samples."

Demetri eyed the new guy slightly – not in a mean way…but only because he noticed the Brit watching him slightly. Probably the tattoos that were peaking out of his uniform made him fun to stare at…or maybe his many piercing. All that Demetri knew, was that he was not the average-looking surgeon…and he was okay with that.
"I was thinking we could use the basic facilities on that but since we have a lab kit, we should be able to do something more in depth. Can you grab a blood kit and test the rest of the team?" Charlie asked, causing the young surgeon to glance towards the mouth of the cave. It was the perfect image from a horror movie. Mist was just crawling in and dissipating when the natural heat of the cave nommed it. Technical term, there.
Grabbing a blood kit, Demetir nodded, “Yeah – we need comparisons,” he smiled, taking a deep breath, “Wish me luck that I won’t be eaten by the oddly thick mist,” he said, with no real inflexion in his voice, to indicate his mood. Giving everyone a wave, he walked out of the mouth of the cave, only to be swallowed by the mist.
-Doctor Wright, Ethan and I found a pod that is oozing some...some really gross goo stuff. We're going to gather samples of it and take it back to the medical team to see if they can confirm anything. Do you know if they're on this channel? Because we may want them to go ahead and gather their own samples of the water in the caves to compare to this...stuff.- a female voice cut through the thick fogginess, causing Demetir to jump. Good thing no one saw him. As his lips parted, the mildly off-putting Brit beat him to it, "We here you. We already have someone headed towards you to take blood samples."
“Yes I am, Demetri threw in there, “Though I don’t have any orange juice or cookies…”
After a moment of walking, he finally found the rest of the group, gathered around…well no words could really describe it. Only the motion of Demetri’s head leaning to the side, and his brows nearly touching, which truly expressed the feeling of looking at it.
“Whoa,” he breathed, his grip on the items to leech people increasing, “So I assume that’s the goo I’m supposed to sample?” he asked, getting a kit to do just that. With a poke, he had just enough of the stuff to test, before holding up a tourniquet and frowning, “Human leech here,” he reported, before having the urge to scan the goo.
It resembled similar signatures from the blood that they had already tested from the locals. Kinda.
Ish.
“Wow…that’s convenient,” he smiled, before resuming his previous actions, “Alright – that stuff probably caused it, but we still need to know who’s sickly,” he didn’t seem happy about his words, “I’ll give you all festive band-aids and lollipops when we get through this, if you’re all good.”

Ethan followed Riley, watching his feet to try and avoid tripping over anything. There was a serious aversion to water vapour brewing: he wouldn't be having hot showers for a while after this was over.
When Riley found the green goo he stooped down to have a closer look without touching it. Whatever this stuff was, however dangerous to humans it was when ingested, it was worth checking out thoroughly. Maybe take a sample back to the ship with them. He hadn't read up much on what was known of Nidhogg technology, but they may get more bang for their buck from their fuel.
He thought about the goo and the mist while Riley radioed Ian. It was possible... "Maybe it's not the goo - well, not the entire goo. Some of it could evaporate at lower temperatures than the rest and become airborne. It would explain why it's so thick - I don't know what their engines are like, but surely something of that consistency would be impractical?"
Someone appeared beside them. Ethan recognised him as the surgeon on SD-2. He was holding a kit. Please be for the goo, he thought to himself.
Quote:
"So I assume that’s the goo I’m supposed to sample?"
"The one and same," he replied, stepping back to give them some space and keep away from the medical kit. It wasn't that he was scared of needles or tests - he just disliked medical stuff in general, when they were happening to him. It was usually painful and kind of gross; one of very few things that unsettled him.
Seeing other people getting treated by doctors, though? Totally fine.

Well, crap. Ethan rolled up his sleeve, stuck out his arm and closed his eyes. "Make it quick." Next time, he was staying space-bound.
His blood sample taken, he borrowed a sample jar to collect some of the goo for his own tests later.

"Deal," Charlie said dryly, coaxing a child to sit down while she took a blood sample from him. "London, right?" He sounded like a Londoner. She was about to make a humorous quip about not liking the city much but bit her tongue - it was probably best to keep the more experienced doctor on side.
Her share of samples gained, Charlie went over to the lab kit to start testing them. It'd been a while since she'd done lab work but it came back to her like riding a bike. A very complex, microscopic level bike. The message over the radio sounded promising. She prepared a sample to test against whatever 'goo' was brought back.
Looking over towards Morgan and Atalya, she gave them a small smile. "How are you guys feeling?"

OOC: Last post before I leave for the weekend good bye all see ya Monday or Sunday for me.
Mallala Underground Village 1350
With his flashlight out in one hand and his handgun he had pulled out in the other he followed Troy into the space ship, yup just another day in the SG program. The trio neared the bridge checking for alien super bugs that could rip them apart in so many ways even Ian could not number them. Nothing so far not even a mouse just what seemed like a dead space ship had crash landed out here in the middle of nowhere and that is how Wright hoped it stayed thank you very much. At the bridge Troy pushed the door open hard and fast to reveal two count them two Nidhoggs at the controls, his handgun went up with Troy's rifle but they didn't move to try and kill them.
Wright brought his flashlight over the duo to show that there heads had been bashed in by hitting the control panels, ouch not the best way to go. Then the smell washed over him and oh my god as he tried from not spraying his lunch all over the bridge, he barely succeeded. He took a swallow to keep it down, "Yuck that stinks," exclaimed with a wipe through the air in front of his nose. As he looked over the controls they seemed dead no pun intended at all no power it looked like from here. Before he could say anything about the condition of this ship the radios squeaked about finding some leaks from the engine and the med staff were on their way for samples. Ian went over the radio and told his science team "The goo," not liking that word but going on anyway "is from a ship that is much like the Wraith kind so it might be well you know bleeding." Ian shuddered at that it was kind of creepy a giant living ship run by space bugs not to mention the space vampires. He looked over the panels and they all were completely dark, no power at all, "It looks like this thing is dead, but Nidhogg tech is not my strong point if there was someone from Ida here they might be able to tell us more, to tell you more I'm going to need more time," he told Troy.
<tag Troy>
With a shrug he responded to SD-1 leader cause well he knew him pretty well over these last couple years "Just saying before you ask better to cover my bases and all that." As he pulled out his laptop and connection cables for living bio matter plugs best thing McKay has come up with in years, just hope they are compatible enough after some Ida reworking. As he pulled open a panel by the dead aliens and his eye on them, you know just in case as he connected the cable to his laptop and control center of the ship and sat down indian style.

Together with the other's Troy poked around the bridge of the organic vessel, looking for clues that would link the ship's crash to the illness that was affecting the locals. Sadly alien hardware wasn't his strong point, and it seemed even Ian was having trouble making heads or tails of it. "It looks like this thing is dead, but Nidhogg tech is not my strong point," Ian explained from the console he was studying. "If there was someone from Ida here they might be able to tell us more, to tell you more I'm going to need more time."
The Colonel looked at another console that strolled alien text that he'd never seen before. "No joy Doc," he replied. "Ida folks are busy looking for the crew of the Aeneid. I'm sure you're more than capable," he added jokingly. Threatened Ian's intelligence might give him a bit more drive to solve the problem at hand. "Just saying before you ask better to cover my bases and all that," he replied as he linked his laptop into the alien ship and took a seat.
Knowing there was little else he could do, Troy made his way back out of the vessel and around to where samples were being taken by the leak of the strange liquid that had leaked out of the vessel. If the locals had come into contact with it or it had made it's way into their water supply it would explain why they'd all fallen ill. Doctor Fitzgerald gathered up the samples he would need and headed back to the village and the small medical lab Doctor Cordoy had set up.
Troy followed the young MD, keeping a weary eye on the sample containers. "That stuff safe to handle?" he asked as the jars were handed to Charlie who began to run her tests. "Last thing we need it to join the locals on their death beds."

For nearly two hours they worked on analysing the green gooey substance found out in the forest, trying to find the component/s that were causing the problems with the locals. Comparing the goo, water and blood samples gave them...well, not a lot. There was too much going on, too many things that they just couldn't identify. Alien galaxy, Charlie reminded herself, It'll have things you guys have never even considered possible.
But then it would have common elements, too.
They put the goo and blood aside and focused on the water. Eventually a sample from just outside the cave, when scanned with one of the ancient devices recognised something. A chemical they hadn't seen or considered until now. H3BO3. The sample was Boric acid - further analysis of the goo and water confirmed it was present in both too, albeit in very small amounts. But it was enough.
"Boric acid is soluble in boiling water. There must be a heat source underground. The goo filters down into the ground, gets heated, and the boric acid ends up in the ground water and the eventual mist, too." She looked towards Troy and Jasmine, the two in charge of the teams. "Recommended treatment: we relocate them somewhere away from the craft and this area of the local aquifer, so they're safe, and then treat their current ailments."
